FYD- Sailing catamaran

The expedition yacht is a catamaran: length 15,60m, width 7m, draft 0.9m.
It will also provide a safe platform for our team in areas where the sea may be dangerous.
The boat was specially developed and built specifically for this research trip.

The yacht will need to cover 113,500 nautical miles (210,000 km). It means that its gear and each and every piece of the boat will need to hold up under the extreme conditions it will face. The rig, the canvas, the ropes, the engines and the gear are optimized to sustain the heavy, constant strain.

The close collaboration between the manufacturers, shipbuilding engineers, skippers and the team will allow us to design; not only the larger pieces and the most obvious functions of the catamaran, but down to the most minute detail.
During long discussions with the manymanufacturers – of ropes, rigs, canvasses, engines, rotating gear units, hatches and all other gear components, we have chosen the best materials to meet the demanding requirements the vessel will face.
The kevlar strengthening on the hulls of the ship will prevent possible damage by the impact of drift ice. Smaller collisions will be intercepted by the crash boxes in both floats.
The insubmersibility constitutes an extra safety even in the event of a major accident. The yacht isn’t designed for wintering in brash ice. For this reason, carefully and very well-prepared navigation in these waters (North West Passage) is of vital importance.

The interior of the yacht, which will become the temporary home for the 12 team members, contains 6 double cabins. The floats will provide the space for the bathrooms complete with showers. The shared living space is designed for 12 with a kitchen equipped with an oven and a refrigerator.
